Set Screw Shaft Collars

Set screw collars are the simplest and most commonly used type of shaft collar. The clamping force is exerted by tightening a screw that is directly pressed onto the shaft. They are a low-cost solution, but a potential disadvantage is that they might damage the shaft.

Set screw shaft collars are best on soft shafts where frequent adjustment is not required and where there is a low axial load—the force along the shaft that would cause the collar to lose its hold.

Clamp-Type or Split Collars

These collars retain their position through the tightening of one or more clamp screws that do not come into contact with the shaft, tube, or pipe. They offer superior clamping force compared to set screw styles on thin-walled tubing and hard or soft shafts. Split collars are easy to adjust and do not mar shafts.

Functions

  • Similar to a shaft’s shoulder when it is clamped into place. However, the split collar is less expensive than machining a shoulder and can be easily relocated.
  • As a clamping mechanism over a split hub. The clamping power is transmitted from the collar to the hub-shaft interface. A common method of connecting components to a shaft is the self-centering split-hub design.
  • As a torque-transmitting component. Split collars can transmit torque when other torque-inducing components (such as lever arms, pulleys, or sprockets) are attached to the collars.

About Clamp-Type Shaft Collar and Rigid Coupling Styles

  • High Strength – our most popular style, where the heads of the clamping screw are recessed.
  • Low Profile – this style has a smaller outside diameter but the screw head does protrude slightly beyond the outside diameter.
  • Heavy Duty – have larger clamping screws and a greater outside diameter for superior holding capacity.
  1. Heavy Duty shaft collars have twice the Torsional Holding Power of standard collars
  2. Heavy Duty Rigid Couplings have three times the Torsional Holding Power of regular couplings. They are also longer and have more screws than regular couplings.

One-Piece Split Clamp-Type Collars

One-piece split clamp-type collars have a single screw and do not come apart. They are used when there is access to the end of the shaft, whether on hard or soft standard round shafts, thin wall tubes, or over a split hub. This type of collar offers more axial holding power compared to set screw types. One-piece split clamp-type collars are available in the following materials:

  • Steel
  • Stainless steel
  • Aluminum
  • Nylon
  • Delrin

Other features and benefits of this collar type include:

  • Precision machined
  • Non-marring
  • Easy to adjust
  • High clamping power
  • Available in three different styles: high strength, low profile, and heavy duty

Two-Piece Split Clamp-Type Collars

These collars have two screws and can be disassembled. They function in applications where there is no access to the end of the shaft, which must be 0.015” or more under nominal diameter. Compared to one-piece split clamp-type collars, two-piece split clamp-type collars offer about 10% more holding power.

Hinge-Type Shaft Collars

Stafford’s exclusive hinge-type shaft collars are ideal for applications requiring fast operation, such as hostile conditions or applications with limited space and time. They combine the flexibility of a two-piece collar with the simplicity of a one-piece collar. Other features and benefits include:

  • Versatility: They can be assembled as a single unit anywhere on the shaft, eliminating loose parts that could be dropped or lost.
  • Compatibility: Hinge-type collars are suitable for soft or hard standard round shafts, thin wall tubes, or over a split hub.
Round Bore Mounting Collars

Round bore mounting collars are off-the-shelf products with built-in component mounting capability. These time-savers are one of many problem-solving components that are unique to Stafford. Round bore mounting collars eliminate the need for costly modifications to standard parts and have a wide range of maintenance, repair, and operation (MRO) applications.

Specialty Round Bore Shaft Collars

Specialty round bore shaft collars are useful in situations where specific functional demands must be met. Unique to Stafford, they are one of our problem-solving components and can be applied in many MRO settings.

Rigid Shaft Couplings & Shaft Adapters

Rigid shaft couplings connect or “couple” two shafts that are in alignment with one another. By clamping the two shafts together, these mechanical components allow rotary motion to be transferred from one rotating shaft (the driving shaft) to the other (the driven shaft).

This simple and robust design enables the coupling to transmit more power than comparable flexible shaft couplings. Given these considerations, industry professionals typically use rigid shaft couplings only in applications where the shafts are coaxial and/or pre-positioned in precise alignment with each other.

Stafford Manufacturing manufactures and distributes a vast selection of rigid shaft couplings for consumer and industrial products. Our couplings can be found in motion control, automation, power transmission, and other OEM and MRO applications.
