Materials

Steel parts are made from mild steel (12L14, 1215, 1026, etc.). They are machinable and can be case hardened. Except in the case of plain-finished or plated set-collars, all steel parts are supplied with a black-oxide finish. They include alloy steel screws. Imported collars are made from A283grC.

1018 Steel is used on Stafford weldable steel collars. It welds more easily than alloys with lead and is a safer alternative.

1117 Steel, as in the Accu-Clamp provides easier machinability than standard mild steel and is used on Stafford parts where more complex machining operations may be employed.

Stainless Steel parts are made from 303 stainless, a non-magnetic alloy offering corrosion resistance, strength and good machinability. Stainless steel parts are supplied with a shiny finish although a matte (or bead-blast) finish is available on request. 18-8 stainless screws are standard. Imported collars are made from 304 stainless.

316 Stainless Steel parts offer additional corrosion resistance and are suitable for applications where harsh chemicals are used. Applications include medical, pharmaceutical, laboratory, semiconductor, food processing, marine, wastewater, and water purification equipment. Both 316 stainless and 18-8 stainless screws are used. A shiny finish is standard with a matte (or bead-blast) finish available on request.

High-Temperature Alloys (such as Inconel and similar superalloys) are offered as specialty materials for applications demanding exceptional strength, oxidation resistance, or sustained performance at elevated temperatures. Stafford supplies special collars and couplings from such alloys for high-temperature environments.

Titanium is available for demanding environments needing high strength, corrosion resistance, and low density (e.g. aerospace, medical, marine). As a specialty option, Stafford can machine collars and couplings from titanium alloys per customer specification.

Brass is used for its good machinability, corrosion resistance, and favorable appearance. In special orders, Stafford offers collars and couplings in brass for applications where its properties are desired.

Bronze is available for applications involving bearing surfaces, wear, or moderate corrosion load. Stafford can supply collars and couplings in bronze in its special/custom materials portfolio.

Aluminum parts are generally made from 2011, 2024 or 6061 alloys for strength, light weight and corrosion resistance. Most aluminum parts are supplied with a shiny finish and alloy steel screws. A matte (or bead-blast) finish is available on request.

Nylon 6/6 plastic can be used for a variety of applications including food processing and pharmaceutical equipment and packaging machinery. Suitable for use where frequent washdowns are necessary. 18-8 stainless screws are used.

Delrin® acetal resin can be used for a variety of applications including food processing and pharmaceutical equipment and packaging machinery. Suitable for use where frequent washdowns are necessary. 18-8 stainless screws are used.

ABS Plastic is used on SlipKnot™ rope clamp products and our Plastic Hinged Mounting Collars. It is lightweight and durable, and can withstand high impacts.

PTFE is a fluoropolymer plastic with a low coefficient of friction is chemically inert and operates effectively over a wide range of temperatures. It is used in our Thrust Washers to provide a bearing surface.

Neoprene is a versatile and durable synthetic rubber used in Stafford’s End Stop Cushions in Shore A-50 (medium) and Shore A-70 (hard) durometers to soften impact and reduce noise.

Finishes

Black Oxide
Black Oxide Black Oxide is used on mild steel products to add a degree of corrosion resistance and improve the torque rating by allowing a better grip on the shaft.
Zinc Plating
Zinc Plating Zinc Plating is a low cost option for enhanced corrosion resistance to mild steel. Used on our imported set screw collars.
Chrome Plating
Chrome Plating Chrome Plating is a decorative shiny finish over mild steel that also offers additional corrosion resistance. It is used where an attractive appearance is important.
Anodized
Anodized Anodized is a reacted finish that provides aluminum an integrated, durable and attractive surface.
Nickel Plated
Nickel Plated Nickel Plating provides a smooth, polished finish with excellent corrosion and wear resistance. It is often used for applications that require both durability and a bright, reflective appearance.
Alodyne
Alodyne Alodyne is a chemical conversion coating applied to aluminum for enhanced corrosion resistance and paint adhesion. It maintains the metal’s conductivity while providing a uniform, protective surface.
